What are openwork brogues?

Brogs are shoes with a special type of decoration - openwork on the surface of the upper. The history of the creation of brogues in shoes is described elsewhere(link) but below we will focus on openwork in oxford shoes.

What is the importance of decorations in men's brogues?

It seems that shoes men's brogues are the most popular type of men's shoes today. They are available in all models and colors: we have brown brogues, black brogues, openwork appears on grain and suede leather, in shoes and boots. Below we present models of oxford shoes and men's brogues in Classic Shoes with examples and styling suggestions (in brackets we provide English names that are often found in men's fashion):

1. Quarter brogues - a type of shoes in which the decoration appears only on the stitching - an example of such brogues is theBerwick 3577 model. In terms of formality, such footwear is only inferior to cap-toe oxford shoes and can be worn with formal suits and coordinated sets (except for the most solemn occasions, such as a wedding). It will be perfect for a prom, when we are a witness at a wedding or when we are going to an evening dinner or to the theater. Of course, a lot depends on the color, remember that the most formal shoes will be black brogues, then burgundy/burgundy (e.g. as in shoes 3577), finally dark brown and its lighter shades.

These are semi-formal and smart casual footwear, depending on the color of the upper, the type of sole and the leather from which they are made. Thus, Berwick 2509 in black or Moka, with a leather sole, are men's brogues that are semi-formal shoes that will perfectly complement business styles, e.g. navy blue and gray suits, and in the case of black, also evening styles - as long as they are not very formal. The suede Partigiani with a York sole are smart casual shoes that even match jeans. To sum up, half brogues are men's brogues with very universal applications.

These are, of course, the least formal of the oxford shoes, although in this case the level of formality depends on the color of the upper and the type of leather from which the shoes are made. Borgioli Leonardo Nero is a rare example of black full brogues, i.e. a combination of a very formal color with a less formal decoration. They will match all evening styles, where greater freedom of clothing is allowed.

 The Carlos Santos 7273, on the other hand, are elegant smart casual shoes that will be a beautiful complement to sports jackets and chino trousers.

Openwork patterns in men's shoes they usually concern shoes with an open vamp, i.e. derby shoes. However, brogues give classic shoes a new dimension and even formal oxfords become very universal shoes. In our opinion, men's brogues with a closed vamp are a must-have item that every man should have in his wardrobe.
