If we talk about classic shoes, the first ones that come to mind areleather shoes, men's . Most of us put all classic shoes into this category, but there are plenty of models of low shoes. In addition to the classic division into oxfords and derby shoes, these shoes differ in the degree of decoration, the type of leather they are made of, the sole and the color. All these mentioned features ofmen's leather shoes influence their level of formality and their suitability for specific styles. Black cap-toe oxfords are worn differently thanbrown men's shoes such as brocaded derby shoes, because the level of formality of these models is completely different. At Classic Shoes, we advise on how to choose shoes for both your feet and a specific outfit. Below we present the basic divisions ofmen's leather shoes and their uses
What are the types of men's shoes
There are many types of men's shoes. Below we present the most important and most common ones:
Division according to the lacing method:
1. Oxfords, i.e. shoes with a closed vamp in which the covers (quarters) are sewn under the upper (or sewn to the upper), are considered more elegant. Oxfords are worn with the most formal men's outfits - tuxedos or evening suits.
2. A derby is a shoe with an open vamp, the uppers are sewn onto the upper, derby shoes are less formal than oxfords, often worn with looser styles, from sports suits to jeans.
This basic one, dating back to the mid-19th century division is the most important when we talk about classic leather men's shoes. It determines, as we mentioned, the level of formality. However, it should be remembered that this is not the only division, and many other features determine whether shoes are casual or can complement formal styling.
Division according to decoration:
1. Wholecut shoes - shoes made of one piece of leather, usually connected with a seam at the heel. Due to the lack of decorations, they are classified as formal footwear.
2. Cap Toe – shoes with a single stitching on the toe. These are probably the most classic men's leather shoes. There has been a debate for many years whether cap-toe oxfords or aviators are the most elegant men's shoes. Without attempting to resolve this dilemma, we can say with certainty that both aviators and cap-toe oxfords are shoes with a high degree of formality.
3. Brogues – these are footwear with decorations that can be delicate (quarter brogues) or cover most of the upper (full brogues). The general rule is that the more decorations, the more casual the shoe.
Division of men's shoes by color
Another element influencing the degree of formalitymen's leather shoes is their color.
Men's black shoes
The most formal aremen's black shoes. There is a common belief that black footwear is the most universal color, but this is not true. The domain ofblack men's shoes are formal occasions where a strict dress code is required, e.g. weddings, funerals, high-profile official meetings. We also wear black shoes in the evening.
Brown men's shoes
Zdecydowanie częściej używane są brown men's shoes are much more frequently used. The classic brown oxford cap toe is also a highly formal shoe, but it goes much better with most everyday outfits than black brogues.Brown men's shoes will match all navy blue, blue, gray, brown and green styles. In fact, the only color of trousers that clashes with the brown of the upper is... black. If we decide on a black suit, practically the only acceptable choice will be shoes in the same color (or burgundy). However, remember that black suits should only be worn in the evening, and during the day only for funerals.
Division of men's leather shoes according to the type of sole
Finallymen's shoes we can divide them according to the type of sole.
It determines not only the level of formality of footwear but also has a typically practical application. Without going into specialist details, we can distinguish two types of soles inmen's leather shoes:
1. Leather – often used in shoes with a higher degree of formality, it is considered more elegant. In addition to purely visual values, a leather sole also has practical advantages - it fits easier to the foot, which breathes better in shoes with such a sole. However, it is not resistant to weather conditions and wears out faster. For this reason, we recommend a leather sole in summer and formal or semi-formal shoes.
2. Rubber - a sole that is inferior to leather in elegance and comfort of wearing, but is superior in functionality, we recommend it for winter shoes and casual, everyday men's leather shoes, such as derby shoes or full brogues.
