Chukka shoes - classic and casual
Buty klasyczne kojarzą się głownie z formalnymi Oxfords. Meanwhile, there are many models of shoes that are classic, like Mozart's waltzes, and at the same time casual, perfect with jeans and sweaters. Just as in music we have Luciano Pavarotti on one side and Mick Jagger on the other, and both are classics, the concept of classic shoes is so broad that it includes both very formal shoes worn with a tuxedo and casual shoes matching jeans.
If we were to point out the king of casual style, it would be Chukka shoes, i.e. derby shoes tied with two or three holes around the ankle, usually (though not always) made of suede with a flexible rubber sole.
Jeśli chcecie dowiedzieć się więcej o tych stylowych i ultra wygodnych butach poniżej opisujemy ich historię i szczegóły charakterystyczne, dzięki którym stały się popularne także wśród wielkich gwiazd kina.
The genesis of Chukka shoes
Sama their genesis is fascinating. In our opinion, this is, among other things, what distinguishes classic shoes from non-classic ones. There is an interesting story behind the creation of each classic model.
Chukka boots in the desert boots version were popularized in the 1950s by the English company C&J Clark, and their prototype was the footwear worn by British soldiers during the African campaign during World War II. Namely, Nathan Clark, who fought in the 1941 Middle East campaign as a member of the 8th Army, noticed that officers in his formation wore strange, suede shoes during their off-duty time. They ordered them from shoemakers in Cairo because they decided that their military boots were not suitable for fighting in the desert, and they needed something that was both light and had good grip on the ground. This is how the first chukka boots made of suede with a flexible sole, in this version called desert boots, were created.
After returning to England, Nathan Clark shared his discovery and the company he worked for started producing Chukka shoes. The name of the model itself comes from the game of Polo, in which periods in the game are marked. One theory is that these shoes were similar to those used in Polo.
This model experienced a second youth thanks to Steve McQueen, who wore chukka shoes in private and appeared in them in his most famous film "Bullit". It is thanks to the Hollywood star nicknamed King of Cool that this model has become extremely popular. This is the favorite model of another great movie star - Daniel Craig (we recommend the film on You TubeBeing Steve McQueen andBeing James Bond).
What are the characteristics of a Chukka boot?
It always reaches to the ankle, or rather covers it, and is tied with laces that have three pairs of eyelets, a version with two pairs is also possible eyelets for laces. The classic model has rounded tips.
As casual shoes, they are often made of suede, but they also look good when made of grain or pea leather. By the way, suede is much more resistant to weather conditions than is usually believed, you can wear suede shoes without any worries also in the winter months (we recommend the blog entrysuede - the best leather for winter ). Just use a suede impregnation agent and brush the leather from any dirt from time to time.
Chukka boots usually have no decorations and are single-colored. It is actually an extremely simple shoe in construction, made of three pieces of leather and a sole. We are big fans of these shoes because:
- Less means more, as the Americans say, chukka shoes are the quintessence of this principle, simple construction, no decorations, raw design, all this speaks very strongly, at the same time, if the shoes are made they are made of high-quality materials, the simplicity looks great.
- Comfort, the shoe is ankle-high and laces up only with three or two holes, but thanks to its simple construction it holds the foot very well.
- Classic casual, chukka shoes are the quintessence of classic and casual at the same time. Chukkas go perfectly with jeans and chinos, creating a great composition with them.
- Universal in many respects. Chukka footwear, as a smart casual shoe, also suits more elegant styles, such as jackets, shirts and ties (although knit rather than formal).
- Chukkas are year-round shoes, suede ones will serve us well also on cooler summer days, and pea leather ones are great fall-winter footwear.
- Originality, it is not a very popular model if we buy it classic chukka, there is a good chance that we are the only ones who have such shoes on our feet, whether at work, on a walk or at a party.
- Classic, casual, original and comfortable, and for any time year - a chukka shoe is the perfect shoe.
